Frances Kathlene Arehart Asher
Frances Kathlene Arehart Asher, born November 16, 1923, went to be with her Lord on April 22, 2013.
She was predeceased by her husbands, Larry Lilley and J.D. Asher. Frances was the daughter of the late Junius Edward and Mattie (Wiseman) Arehart. She was also preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters. Frances is survived by a stepson, Steve Lilley; stepdaughter, Janet Sellers; two sisters-in-law, Mabel Lilley Arehart and Mary Asher Hafer. She is also survived by 17 nieces and nephews that loved her very much.
Frances was born in Fishersville, Virginia and graduated from Beverly Manor High School around 1941. She worked for DuPont for many years in Waynesboro, VA. Later she worked as a postal worker in Laurinburg, North Carolina.
Frances, along with her husband, J.D. Asher, began directing the Scotland County Humane Program around 1974. She said this action was to better her community and to glorify God. In 1998, Laurinburg Mayor Bill Purcell wrote, “I don’t think anyone would disagree that there is nobody who has done more for cats and dogs…” Frances’ passion was the humane care of animals, but she was equally kind and serving to her fellowman. Her church home in Laurinburg was Trinity Presbyterian Church, where she was a faithful and active member. Despite a myriad of health issues, Frances loved life and embraced it with vigor till the very end. Her enthusiasm in appreciating life and living each day to the fullest was a real witness of her Christian faith to those who knew her.
A celebration of Frances’ life will be held on Saturday May 4, 2013 at 2 pm at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes with Reverend Phil Showers and Reverend Melinda Merkley King. The family will receive friends following the service. A second service will be held in Laurinburg, NC at Trinity Presbyterian Church at 1:00 Monday, May 6.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to honor Frances’ life and memory to the Scotland County Humane Society, 1401 West Boulevard, Laurinburg, NC, 28352.
