Betty was born on October 25, 1940 to the late John Samuel and Effie Beulah Lee (Pultz) Mays. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Rev. Walter Mays.
Betty graduated from Petersburg School of Nursing, received her BS from EMU, worked as a Parish Nurse Graduate in Winchester, and received her MS from the University Of Virginia School Of Nursing. She was an innovator in taking the Chelsea drink with 1% alcohol off the general market, thus protecting children.
Betty was a dedicated Nurse, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Her loving and gentle spirit will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Tom Cox; a daughter, Kim Miller and husband, Bill; sons, John Cox and wife, Leda, Philip Cox and wife, Dreama; grandson, Chad Miller and his children, Lane, Bekah, Cameron, Mariah; granddaughter, Amanda Miller and fiancé, Charlie Trent, and her children, Darren and Jared; grandson, Riley Cox and wife, Savannah, and their son, Quinn; grandson, Ryan Cox and wife, Brittney, and their children, Thomas and Rachel; and her life-long friends, Ron and Theresa Hunt and their family.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday February 19, 2022 at 3 PM at Pleasant View Lutheran Church, 2733 Spring Hill Road, Staunton, VA 24401, with Rev. Phyllis Diamond officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests all memorial contributions be made to Pleasant View Lutheran Church, 2733 Spring Hill Road, Staunton, VA 22401.
