She was born January 29, 1932 in Nelson County, the daughter of the late John Roberts and Nora Smith Roberts Perry.
Betty graduated from Wilson Memorial High School in the first graduating class of 1948 and later from Fairfax Hall Junior College with a business major. She studied her art through James Madison University and Beverly Street Studio School of Art in Staunton. Her lifelong love for art led her to become a member of the Virginia Watercolor Society and a charter member of the Shenandoah Valley Art Center, where she served on the board. Gov. and Mrs. Bailles chose her work to hang in their private quarters during their time in the Governor’s Mansion.
She was employed by E. W. Barger Insurance Company until 1963, when she went to work with her husband at Arehart Associates, a CPA firm which they founded.
Betty was a lifetime member of Main Street United Methodist Church and the Altar Guild, serving as Co- Chairman. She was active in the Waynesboro Junior Women’s club where she served as president. Some of Betty’s accomplishments were: president of the Waynesboro Junior Women’s club, chairman of the area American Red Cross bloodmobile and the area Mental Health Association with emphasis on the Woodrow Wilson Rehab Center.
She helped to locate and raise money to purchase the site for the present Art Building on Wayne Avenue. Betty went on to receive historical status after overseeing the renovation to restore it back to its original state.
In 1978, Betty received the Waynesboro’s Outstanding Woman’s Award (WOW) for Community Service.
Survivors include her husband, Forrest Arehart; sisters, Margaret Halterman (Richard) and Dorothy Sensabaugh (Glenn); as well as a number of nephews and a niece.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at Augusta Memorial Park followed by a memorial service at 2:00 PM at Main Street United Methodist Church by Pastor Linda Kusse-Wolfe.
There will be no formal visitation at the funeral home. Friends may pay their respects on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM at the funeral home.
