Tom graduated from high school and later earned his degree from Madonna University. He spent two years in the U.S. Army from 1956-57 in Berlin Germany. Tom married Mary Anne Stinson on October 17, 1959, and together raised five children: Timothy (Susan) Daily, Annemarie (Mike) Cash, Andrew (Karen) Daily, Jennifer (Kevin) McPherson and Kevin Daily. Eleven grandchildren; Taylor (Jahaira) McPherson, Kirsten (Owen) O’Riordan, Timothy (Polly) Cash, Rhett Cash, Daly McPherson, Hannah Daily, Max McPherson, Drew Daily, Audris Daily, Brooksley Daily and Thomas E. Daily deceased. Five great grandchildren; Fiona O’Riordan, Cash O’Riordan, Ava McPherson, Quinn Cash and Eiley O’Riordan.
Tom was active in sports, playing football and baseball in high school, later playing softball, handball, and golf. He was one of the original members of the Wayne Fitness Center where he enjoyed working out, jogging, and swimming. Tom loved to travel, he visited all fifty states and over forty countries. He was a lifelong fan of Notre Dame football since 1946 and was HUGE fan of all Detroit sports teams.
Tom and Mary Anne began their lives in Dearborn Heights before moving to Wayne in June 1971, living in Wayne until moving in 2021 to Walton Woods in Canton. Tom started his career in banking, working for NBD and Wayne Bank. At age 40, he made a career change and received a degree from Madonna University then worked for the City of Wayne, retiring in 1992 as the City Manager. After retiring, he served as an interim city manager for several local cities in Michigan. During his life, he worked part-time at his parent’s grocery store, family parking lots at Olympia and Tiger Stadium, as well as owning a small parking lot near Tiger Stadium. Later, he worked part-time at Harry J. Will Funeral Homes until retiring in 2018.
Tom was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Wayne Civitan Club, Wayne 100 Club (one of the founders) and one of the original members of W.U.J.A.’s. He was member of St. Mary Parish for over 50 years and a long-time retreatant with St. Paul of the Cross in Detroit. Tom donated his time to civic and non-profit organizations, he was an active volunteer with Red Cross, St. Vincent DePaul, Penrickton Center for Blind Children, Special Olympics, United Way, and Jr. Achievement. He was a member of the local Draft Board for the Vietnam War and was appointed to the Great Lakes Safety Standards Commission in 1987 by Governor Blanchard. Tom spent his final days with family and friends at Angela Hospice in Livonia.
In lieu of flowers, donations are welcome to St. Mary Church in Wayne or St. Paul of the Cross Passionist Retreat Center in Detroit.
A visitation for Thomas will be held Tuesday, September 5, 2023 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Harry J Will Funeral Homes, 34567 Michigan Avenue, Wayne, Michigan 48184. A scripture service will occur Tuesday, September 5, 2023 at 7:30 PM, 34567 Michigan Avenue, Wayne, Michigan 48184. Family and friends may gather on Wednesday, September 6, 2023 at 10:30 AM at St Mary Catholic Church, 34530 Michigan Ave, Wayne, Michigan 48184, the funeral mass will follow beginning at 11:00 AM.
