August 13, 1923 – March 19, 2025
Ruby Lucille Kovarik (Wheelock), 101 years fabulous, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2025, surrounded by the love and prayers of her family—just the way she would have wanted it.
Born in Cheboygan, Michigan, Ruby was a woman of grace, grit, and good old-fashioned Midwestern charm. She met the love of her life, Frank Kovarik, at the local Five and Dime—a story so classic it practically begs for a black-and-white movie adaptation. The pair tied the knot in 1943 and before Frank passed in July 2007 they celebrated 64 years of marriage. During World War II, Ruby loyally followed Frank to his military assignments, proving that where love leads, the heart follows. She would go anywhere, do anything, and face it all with lipstick on and heels if that's what it took. They eventually settled in Redford, MI where they raised their four children with Ruby embracing the joys and challenges as a devoted full time mom and wife.
Ruby was a member of St. Agatha Church, a fierce supporter of St. Agatha School, and an active force in community organizations like the Foresters and the Eagles—where she was remembered and loved by many.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Frank whom we imagine greeted her in heaven with a warm hug followed by a polka dance. She is also preceded by son-in-law Tom Dobrowolski, and daughter-in-law Kathy Kovarik. Ruby leaves behind a legacy of love: children Alan (Cheri) Kovarik, Pam Dobrowolski, Donna (Tim) Rourke, and Dan Kovarik (Yvette Sakiewicz, fiancée), along with 13 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren—each a living testament to her warmth, wit, and strong opinions shared at any given moment during a visit or phone call.
Ruby had a passion for family, a flair for fashion, and a feisty presence. Her ability to engage others in conversation was effortless, her sense of style iconic, and her ability to make everyone feel at home truly cherished.
A Celebration of Life will be held on May 3, 2025 at 1 p.m. at Harry J. Will Funeral Home in Wayne, MI. There will likely be stories, laughter, a few tears, and at least one classic Ruby-ism shared. Visiting will begin at noon until 3:00pm.
In her honor, consider donning your sharpest outfit, telling someone you love them, and maybe sneaking a little dessert before dinner—just as Ruby would’ve encouraged.
