She was the beloved wife of Edward Allen for 55 happy years. Loving mother of Edward Allen (Sherry Ann) Thornton II, Sherry Ann Thornton-Wilson, and Mary Ann Thornton. Dear grandma of Mark (Miranda) Thornton, Melissa Stein, and David Allen (Tabitha) Wilson. Great-grandma of Matthew, Brianna, Kathryn Rose, Shaun, Michael, Colin, Jake, and Hannah. Sister of Robert (Rachael) Feldmann, John (Barbara) Feldmann, and Jim (Norma) Feldmann. Joan was also survived by her father-in-law, John James Thornton, Sr., her sister-in-law, Sadie Thornton, her brother-in-law, John James Thornton Jr., and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her sister-in-laws Roberta Feldmann and Carol Feldmann.
Joan was a devout Catholic and a long time member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Belleville, Michigan before she became ill.
Joan worked as a file clerk for Michigan Basic Property Insurance Association for 16 years until her retirement.
She deeply loved children was extremely giving. When she retired she worked as a teacher’s aid and lunch lady at Brick Elementary in Washtenaw County. She would give all her money to the children who had no lunch and Joan would also purchase scapulars from the Catholic Church to give away to friends and strangers who were ill or disabled.
The family will receive friends for a visitation on Saturday, September 15, 2012 from 3-9pm and again on Sunday, September 16, 2012 from Noon until the time of the 2:00pm Funeral Service, led by Father Henry Roodbeen, at Harry J. Will Funeral Home - Wayne Chapel.
Joan will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
