

BERDINE "DEAN" CHAPPLE HENDRIXSON DETTAR, age 84 of Wayland, because she had accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior; He gathered her to Himself on May 24, 2013. Berdine was born Feb. 2, 1929 to Harold & Armeda Reed Chapple in Greenville, MI. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Dick Chapple, son Jeffrey Hendrixson and husband Frank Dettar. Berdine was a wonderful mother and is survived by her children and they "arise and call her blessed." Jan Allman, Grand Rapids; Jim (Sue) Hendrixson, Idaho; Joyce (Tom) Bellows, Florida; and Jack (Allyn) Hendrixson, New Hampshire; step-daughters Barb (Bill) Van Houten, Ohio; Nancy (Vic) Wirick, Novi; Mary Dettar, Wayland; sister Ruth (Tim) Taylor, Hopkins; 22 grandchildren, 23 great- grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and innumerable spiritual daughters Titus 2:3-5. Berdine graduated from Wayland High School and then worked as a Comptometer at Upjohn in Kalamazoo. At 52, she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Education from Grand Valley State University. She then taught Special Ed at Wayland High School until retirement in 1993. Dean loved sports and mourned the day at 13 when her mom said she couldn't play football with the boys anymore and had to start wearing dresses. She enjoyed golf, swimming, fishing, camping, playing cards, dancing, playing piano and traveling to visit her children. Berdine was known for her beautiful soprano voice and sang at many weddings, in the Church and Wayland Community Choirs. Berdine and Frank were known for their prayer ministry and their home- a place of hospitality and laughter. The family will receive visitors on Friday, May 31, 3:00 pm-7:00 pm at Kubiak-Cook Funeral Home in Wayland. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 1 at Leighton Church 4180- 2nd St Caledonia with Reverend David L. McBride officiating, visitation will be from 12:00pm- 1:30pm followed by a Celebration Service at 2:00 pm. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to Leighton Church.
