Irene Middleton

Irene B. Middleton, age 90, passed away on March 7th, 2019 at Corning Guthrie Hospital. She was born on June 6th, 1928, the youngest of 5 daughters born to Charles and Bessie Patterson Brown of Prattsburgh, New York. She graduated from Prattsburgh Franklin Academy in June 1946. During the war years 1944 and 1945 summers she was employed as a riveter at Mercury Aircraft Plant, Hammondsport, New York. After graduation she went to Business School, graduating in June 1947 and then went to work at Steuben County Welfare Department, Child Welfare Division. In December, 1947 she married Gaylord Ellis and they had four children, Charlotte Gorton, Zephyrhills, FL., Carol Turo (Albert) of Albany, New York, Timothy Ellis (Christine Roosa) of Seneca, S.C., and Sandra Clark (Anthony) of Howard, NY.; Eight grandchildren, Mark and Jason Gorton, Lisa Vega, Brian and Jon Turo, Steven and Sarah Fuller, and Leah Pierce; Nineteen great grandchildren; and Three great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her four sisters, Elizabeth Schmahl, Barbara Larder, Harriet Chapman and Charlotte Badger. In April, 1968 she returned to work for New York State, SUNY in Alfred, New York retiring in 1988. At that time she relocated to Florida. In January, 1990 she married Donald Middleton who had four children, Steven, Kimberly, Mark and Nanette. Mr. Middleton died in December 1992.

Irene was a member of the Valleydale Social Club, Valleydale R.O. Association, Classy Ladies Group and a longtime member of the Arkport American Legion, Post 1248 Aux. and a faithful attendee of First United Methodist Church in Zephyrhills.

Irene will be deeply missed by her beloved family and her many friends, especially those in Zephryhills, FL where she resided for 32 years. She will be remembered for her quick wit, her love of a good party, a card game, and a glass of wine.
