OLD TOWN AND TOPSHAM - 71, Tim died peacefully August 10, surrounded by his loving family at a Bangor hospital after a series of health complications. He was born in Old Town July 12, 1944. The son of Donald and Eva (Long) Smart. Tim was educated in Old Town schools graduating from Old Town High School in 1962.
Always a hard working man he owned and operated Tim's Little Big Store for 25 years before moving to the Brunswick area, where he worked at Sweet Dreams furniture store and also proudly worked in the mail room at Bowdoin College for the last 18 years as the campus mailman.
Everywhere Tim found himself he seemed to fit right in immediately. Whether you knew him for a few hours or for many many years he had a way of making people feel instantly at ease and welcomed. Besides his family, his most loved possessions were his car collection which was ever changing, his John Deere tractors and his many toboggans. He loved to have family and friends enjoy taking a run down the hill and across the pond.
Tim was predeceased by his parents Donald and Eva (Long) Smart. His step-father Chauncey Miller, who raised him, two brothers Donald "Sonny" and Sidney Smart.
Surviving are his three loving children, Dr. Jennifer L. Gavett of Orono, Michele L. Madden and her husband Eric of Old Town, TJ Smart and his wife Kerry of Oakland. The love of his life Brenda G. Smart of Milford. Three sisters Mayre Ann Veilleux and her husband Philip of Old Town, Dottie Ehman of Milford and Harriet Cummings of Auburn. Four cherished grandchildren Ashleigh McAlinden and husband Jake, Zachary Madden, Hunter and Gabriella Smart. One special great-grandson Griffin McAlinden, as well as, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Tim also leaves behind a special family in Topsham, Linc and Cass and their children Sabrina and Duncan, whom he grew very fond of during his time living next door to them. He will also be missed by his good friend Bob Buzzell.
Visiting hours will be held 5-7 P.M. Thursday August 13, at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main Street, Old Town. A Memorial service will be held Friday August 14, at 10 A.M. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Lawndale Cemetery, Old Town.
