Darryl F. Stewart, 55, of Winslow, has gone to his heavenly home after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He will be welcomed there by our Lord, Jesus Christ as well as his beloved twin brother Dana who also left his earthly home far too soon.
Darryl passed away peacefully at home on November 30, 2010, where he wanted to be surrounded by his devoted wife Janine, his parents, his three sons, Darryl Jr., Joel, and Justin, his stepson Keith Gilbert, and his brothers, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was a man who loved greatly and was loved greatly in return.
Darryl was born in Skowhegan on May 15, 1955, the son of Cyrus and Lillian (White) Stewart. He graduated from Carrabec High School in North Anson, in 1973. He worked for Time Warner Cable for 26 years. He won two demolition derbies, and prepped a car for his son Justin to race this year, and he did a great job. He attended several derbies this year to cheer on Kevin Douglas, who he considered to be a son, and thoroughly loved it. Darryl loved campfires and spent many a night around one at Rick & Jackie Charity’s house. He was an avid puzzle maker. During his illness, he completed a 24,000 piece puzzle titled “Life.” He was a never-ending jokester, and was never happier than when he could prank someone. He loved babies and animals. Great nephews, Alexander Chavez, 3 months old, and Jude Sheehan, 1 month old, spent much quality time on his bed amusing Uncle Darryl. His beloved dog Myth and the newest addition to the family, Taco, kept him company on his sick bed to the end.
Darryl is survived by his wife Janine; sons, Darryl, Jr. and his wife Sarah of Augusta, Joel and his wife Morgan of Norman, OK, and Justin Stewart of China, ME; stepson Keith Gilbert and his fiancé Jennie Blake of Chambersburg, PA; parents Cyrus and Lillian Stewart of Madison; his brothers, Ricky Stewart and his wife Margaret of Skowhegan, Stephen Stewart and his wife Pam of Madison, and Brian Stewart and his wife Joanne of Enfield, CT; his grandchildren, Wyatt Stewart of Norman, OK, Addison and Jack Stewart of Augusta; along with many nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly. He became a father figure to Dana’s children and enjoyed many great times with them, especially his fishing trip to Alaska with Dana’s son, Bobby. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Richard Poissonnier and his wife Lucinda of Texas, Phillip Poissonnier and his wife Beverly of Fairfield Center, and Paul Poissonnier of Oakland; his sisters-in-law, Elaine Grenier of Winslow, Elizabeth Leung and her husband Tom of Winslow and Deanna Roberge of Windsor, his very dear friends Rick and Jackie Charity, and two very special work friends, Kevin Douglas (his work son), and Alan Veilleux.
He is predeceased by his twin brother Dana in 2009; his brother Larry in 1968; his nephew Johnathen Stewart in 2002, his grandparents, Philip and Bernice Stewart and Frank and Eva White.
God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be,
So he put his arms around you and whispered come home to me.
We watched you and saw you pass away,
Although we loved you dearly, we couldn’t make you stay.
A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest,
God broke our hearts to prove to us that he only takes the best.
Go with God, we love you.
The entire family would like to thank Dr. Andrew Hertler, and the nurses who cared for Darryl while he was ill, especially Jamie Bell, Anita, Donna, Jodi, Cassie and all the other wonderful caregivers at the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care. They not only cared for him, they loved him and kept him happy and laughing, which Darryl so appreciated. Thank you to Hospice Care for the wonderful work they do. They are very special people who provided exceptional care, for which we will always be grateful. Special thanks to all the friends who helped with yard work and the many other things that needed doing around the house.
Extra special love and thanks to nephew Mike Chavez who provided much relief to Darryl over the months and for his daily visits to give Darryl Reiki treatments at the end of his life. Darryl loved his Reiki treatments and didn’t hesitate to let us know how well he felt and how relaxed he was. Over the months Darryl was also learning the principles of Reiki from Mike. Mike awarded Darryl his Reiki Master certificate on November 26, 2010, an accomplishment he was very proud of.
