Waterville – Catherine G. Garland, 91, of Waterville passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side at Oak Grove Center on Friday, February 14, 2014. She was born in Tracadie, Prince Edwards Island, Canada on December 19, 1922 a daughter of John James and Millicent (Ready) McInnis.
Catherine moved to the United States in 1945 and worked at Keyes fiber for many years. She met the love of her life Philip Garland and they were married in January of 1953 at Sacred Heart Church in Waterville. Together they traveled to the many places that Philips deployment took him including Keflavik, Iceland, England, and Coraopolis, Pennsylvania. Catherine was naturalized in 1956 in Washington D.C. Together Catherine and Philip returned to Waterville after his time in the service. She worked as a sales clerk for Thibault’s Jewelers, the Chandler Nursing Home as well as helping at the Brookside School but mostly was a homemaker raising her two children.
Catherine was an avid Pianist and loved listening to music. She enjoyed family gatherings and going out to eat especially with her sisters. She belonged to the Crafty Ladies as well as a bible study group.
Catherine is survived by her son John P. Garland and wife Leanne of Waterville and a daughter Donna Garland of Waterville, and her grandchildren Bodhi Simpson, William Stubbert Jr. and Victoria Stubbert. She also leaves her sisters Mary Pople of Oakland, Sally Larome of St. Catherines, Ontario, Millicent O’Regan of Prince Edwards Island, and Eileen Duffy and husband Richard of Prince Edwards Island as well as great grandchildren Toby Simpson, Willow Simpson and Jayden Farrington and many nieces and nephews.
Catherine was predeceased by her parents, her husband Philip, a twin sister Bertha Randall, sister Ida Crocco, and brothers Alan, John B, and James “Jimmy” McInnis.
Catherine’s family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Oak Grove Center for their help and kindness during their mother’s stay as well as Cindy Wyman of Mainley Elder care for her compassion as well as Dr. Nancy Filliter. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 20 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Veilleux Funeral Home. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 Am at Sacred Heart Church on Friday, February 21, 2014. A burial will be held at St. Francis Cemetery in the spring.
