Jeremiah Stephen Dunleavy, formerly of Washingtonville, NY, has passed away after a long illness related to complications caused by Parkinson’s disease.
He was the loving husband for 55 years of his wife, Mary, who resides in Middletown. Jerry was born on October 3, 1926 in the Bronx, NY, the son of Ellen and Jeremiah Dunleavy.
He was predeceased by his sister, Norah Richey of New Rochelle and brother, James Dunleavy of New Windsor.
Jerry was the devoted father of Katherine Dunleavy-Johnson and husband, Joseph of Lewisville, NC, Jeremiah and Diane Dunleavy of Cleveland, OH, Margaret Dunleavy-Engelman and husband, Noel of Atlanta, GA, Patricia Dunleavy-Cave and husband, Mel Cave of Wappingers, NY, and LTC John Dunleavy and wife, Ann of Hohenfelf, Germany.
In addition, he is lovingly remembered by his 18 grandchildren: Katilyn and Sean Johnson, Jeremiah, Josh, Kelly and Kate Dunleavy, Michael Knoll and wife, Abigail, James Jeremiah Knoll, Amberle and Seth Engelman, Ryan, Patrick, Daniel, and Melinda Cave, Meagen, Morgan, John Robert and Mary Katherine Dunleavy; and great-grandchild, Jeremiah Knoll; several cousins, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jerry, who was awarded both a Purple Heart and Bronze Star during the Korean War, was most proud of his service in the Marine Corps. Moreover, Jerry was a NYC Policeman for 27 years. After retiring from the police force, he worked for Time-Life Corporation in Manhattan, NY, as an Assistant Director of Security. Jerry enjoyed serving as the VFW commander in Washingtonville, NY. He enjoyed managing the "Voice of Democracy" Scholarship program at the VFW, and assisted the St. Mary’s Knights of Columbus in Washingtonville.
Jerry, a strong and outgoing man, will be missed for his sense of humor, optimism, and love of life by all who knew him. His contagious laugh would often be heard at any gathering he attended.
The family wishes to give thanks to the generous support of Nurse Practitioner Chris Feroli of the VA and the loving care of Hospice workers Christa, Suzanne and Frank and the church visitations of Jim Holland and Fr. James Sidoti of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish of Middletown.
Visitation will be Thursday, August 19, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at David T. Ferguson Funeral Home, 20 North St., Washingtonville. The Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Church, Friday, August 20, at 10 a.m., followed by the burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Washingtonville.
