Gertrude "Trudy" M. Allen, 97, a former long-time resident of Newburgh, died Sunday, January 31, 2016, surrounded by family. In 1978, she relocated to Largo, Florida and spent her final years in Collegeville, Pennsylvania.
Born in 1918 in New York City to Clinton and Viola Tomer, she was predeceased by her husband Vincent J. Allen, brother Arthur Tomer, son Robert V. Allen and daughter Joan M. Tursi.
Survivors include son-in-law, Mike Tursi; grandson, Michael Lofaro; granddaughters, Dina Viteretti, Bonnie McKernan, Christine Hernandez, Barbra Veffer, Karen Murray; and fifteen great grandchildren.
A statement from her family reads: "Trudy called herself 'the Tough Old Broad' but to us she was a generous, kind-hearted soul who had a knack for loving fiercely and making people laugh. She held many jobs in her lifetime - from sewing pocketbooks during World War II to working in a Newburgh flower shop - but her main occupation was loving her family, her 'friend' Jesus, all children, and of course animals, a menagerie that over the years included an injured wild bird, an abandoned flying squirrel, a horse, dogs and many chatty parakeets named Pretty Baby. Trudy’s heart was enormous."
Visiting hours will take place on Friday, February 5, 2016 from 9 to 11 a.m. with a Service at 11 a.m. at David T. Ferguson Funeral Home, Washingtonville, NY. Burial will immediately follow at 12:15 p.m. at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Newburgh, NY.
