Edwin Schrader, 85, of Salisbury Mills, NY, went to be with the Lord on March 22, 2013, in his home surrounded by his loving family. Ed was born on April 1, 1927 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of Louis and Maybel Schrader. After serving in the US Navy, Ed moved upstate, where he met the love of his life and wife of 64 years, Nancy Kraiza. Together they raised a family of six children while Ed built a successful career in the construction industry, eventually owning and operating his own general contracting business. Ever thoughtful of his community, Ed was a Cubmaster for Pack 16 in Washingtonville, NY and served as a volunteer firefighter and later chaplain for the Salisbury Mills Fire Department. During many summers, he and Nancy also hosted children for the Fresh Air Fund.
Ed was a devoted Christian and Ruling Elder of the Westminster Church in Rock Tavern, NY. His Christian service also included roles as a lay minister and teacher of theology classes at Chapel Field Christian School, which he helped build. In October 2011, Chapel Field Christian School was dedicated as the Edwin Schrader Educational Facility. Ed recorded some of his teachings in a book titled, "The Truth That Sets You Free: A Collection of Sermons on the Importance of Cultivating the Fruit of the Spirit in Everyday Life."
Ed truly exemplified the fruits of the spirit. Throughout his life, Ed blessed and enriched the lives of those he knew through his kindness, love, and generosity. He fostered and nurtured countless young people and became a surrogate Grandpa to many.
Ed will be greatly missed by his devoted wife and adoring children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Schrader, and children: Christine Miller and her husband, Pat, Cathy Augello and her husband, David, Edwin Schrader and his wife, Bernice, Charlene Schrader-Doehla, and David Schrader and his wife, Kristina, along with fourteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and sister, Sally Tubbs. Ed was predeceased by his daughter, Cheri Schrader and his sister, Wanda Burwick.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 26th, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the David T. Ferguson Funeral Home, 20 North St., Washingtonville, NY 10992. A service will be held on Wednesday, March 27th, at 10 a.m. at the Westminster Presbyterian Church on Station Rd. in Rock Tavern, NY with a burial to follow in Bethlehem Presbyterian Cemetery, Cornwall, NY.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church: Westminsterchurch-ny.org or sent to Chapel Field Christian School.
