Barbara Lyons, a longtime resident of South Blooming Grove, died Tuesday, January 31, 2012, after a long illness. She was born and raised on the upper East Side of Manhattan. Her parents were James and Rose Heaney Higgins. She graduated from Blessed Sacrament High School in New York in 1952. Before moving to Orange County in 1963, she lived in Westwood, NJ.
Barbara was very active in the community. She worked as a Librarian at, and served as the Director of, the Monroe Free Library. She was on the Board of the Moffat Library in Washingtonville, and the Orange County Library Association. She was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Washingtonville, NY. She is survived by her loving husband of fifty seven years, Walter L. Lyons; her three children: Kevin Lyons and his wife, Christine of Boston, MA, Lawrence Lyons of Cold Spring, NY, and Thomas Lyons and his wife, Amiena of New York, NY; her sister, Veronica D'Anci and her husband, Thomas of South Blooming Grove, NY, and her five grandchildren: Elena McCormack of Austin, TX, Karam Lyons, Eric Lyons, Azeem Lyons and Aydin Lyons. Her parents, James and Rose Higgins, predeceased her. Her beauty and grace will be greatly missed by all her knew her. The family would like to thank the people and staff at the Valley View Nursing Home for their loving and expert care. Visitation will be at the David T. Ferguson Funeral Home in Washingtonville, NY on Sunday, February 5 from 2 to 5 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Saint Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Washingtonville, Monday, February 6 at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks instead that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
