On Thursday, August 19th, 2021, William Waldemar Werber passed away peacefully at his home in North Bethesda, Maryland.
Bill was born on January 8th, 1931, in Washington, D.C. to William M. Werber and Kathryn (Potter) Werber. He grew up in College Park and was an Eagle Scout. He graduated from McKinley Tech High School in 1949 where he lettered in football, basketball and baseball. From there it was on to Duke University where he graduated in 1953. While at Duke, he joined the Sigma Chi fraternity which became a lifelong passion as did Duke. He was a two-time All-American baseball player in 1952 and 1953 and named to the All-Southern Conference (predecessor to the ACC) team three years. Upon graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps for two years before being admitted to The Wharton School where he studied insurance and received his MBA. On September 9, 1957, Bill married his lovely wife, Ailcey Jones. They were married for 63 years. They particularly enjoyed traveling with family and friends and had a joint passion for the Baltimore Orioles. Bill joined the Werber Insurance Agency in 1957 which was started by his grandfather, Waldemar Werber, in 1904. The agency is one of the oldest in Maryland. Bill was a devoted father and very civic minded particularly when it came to sports in the Old Farm community where he and Ailcey lived for 53 years. He was proud of co-founding the Farmland Athletic Association and loved coaching the Werber Wildcats baseball team as well as basketball and soccer. He was a lifelong member of Columbia Country Club where he enjoyed playing golf, tennis and paddle tennis.
Bill is survived by his wife, Ailcey and four children, Bruce C. Werber, Cynthia Beauregard (John), Scott R. Werber (Karen) and Tracey Werber, eight grandchildren and two sisters, Patricia Bryant of Charlotte, NC and Susie Hill (Dan) of Durham, NC.
The family will receive friends at Joseph Gawler's Sons, 5130 Wisconsin Ave., NW, DC on Wednesday, October 6, from 2-4 and 6-8. Services will be held at Faith United Methodist Church, 6810 Montrose Road, Rockville, MD on Thursday, October 7th at 1:00 with a reception at Columbia Country Club, 7900 Connecticut Ave., Chevy Chase from 2:30-4:30. Interment will take place at St. Paul's Rock Creek Cemetery, NW, DC on Friday, October 8th at 11:00.
