I remember Bill as the new kid at West Riverside  Elementary in Jacksonville, Florida. Our frioendship was brief because his family moved out to Jax Beach where in high school he had a show on the local beaches radio station. He was smart, lanky, good looking but also tough when he had to be and obviously headed toward a career in some area of broadcasting. 

Back when the Beatles first invaded the U.S.A., two friends & I frequented WMBR radio studios in Jacksonville, Florida.  We were  in 9th grade, and Bill Greenwood was a star deejay at the station.   Not only was he gorgeous, but he couldn't have been more kind, considerate,  generous & patient with these 3 silly, starstruck 14 year-olds.   Those visits to WMBR and Bill Greenwood are some of my very favorite memories.   I was in awe & so proud when  he started reporting for ABC in the 70s.   At the White House!   I emailed his business address about 15 years ago, to say hello & reminisce.  While he didn't remember me, of course, he was kind enough to send a lovely, appreciative reply.

Bill was one of the most wonderful people to have graced my life. We clicked immediately when we met at ABC News and shared countless serious and fun times when we anchored together on the network's World News Now. And we stayed in touch, though lately mostly remotely, over almost 30 years.  Bill was an excellent reporter - a role model, one today's generation should make note of, learn from and emulate.  Most of all, Bill was a family man whose greatest joy - which he so happily shared in emails & personal platforms - was, yes, his family. Every one.  I will miss his happy smile, his notes, his sense of humor.  Bill...thank you.  We'll miss you so much. 

Bill was a first-rate reporter, great to work with, and a very good sport. I especially remember the side of him we all saw when he filled in as an anchor on the program I created, World News Now, the ABC News overnight program.

Dearest  Greenwood family and friends,

I knew Bill very well as a "hard-working and deeply talented" broadcast journalist for ABC's news bureau and the former Mutual Broadcasting System in Washington, DC.  Bill knew the political players and had an integrity relationship with them.

If I recall correctly he was originally from Jacksonville, Florida and was filled with a personality filled with  soft-spoken Southern charm and personality.

I learned of Bill's passing from members of a retired journalist's group that gathers frequently.

Dear Marsha and Kelly,
I  am so sorry Bill has left us.   I treasured working with him.  Amid many big egos and sharp elbows at ABC News, Bill stood out as kind and calm.  And funny!  In addition to navigating together the backup positions in ABC's tiny White House booth, we had fun co-anchoring the overnight show in New York. There are probably viewers who still remember us teasing each other on air. 
And so, so often he spoke of you both, how wonderful you are, how much he loved you.  You lit up his life. 
I can only imagine the depth of the ache of losing him.  I hope happy memories will fill it, bit by bit.
