Stephen M. Green died peacefully at home surrounded by his family and friends. Steve was born in Baltimore, Maryland to Richard and Elizabeth Green, the youngest of four boys. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Robert.
Steve attended the Gilman School in Baltimore and Yale University. He resided in New Haven, CT until he moved to Washington DC to join the administration of Mayor Anthony Williams in 2000 (where he played a major role in the Montreal Expos move to Washington and the development of Nationals Park). At the end of the Williams’ administration, he was SVP, Acquisitions, for the William C. Smith Co. and thereafter Director of Capital Programs for the District of Columbia Housing Authority. In 2014, he joined the NHP Foundation as Chief Operating Officer; at his death, he was EVP and Chief Investment Officer at NHP Foundation. Virtually his entire professional career was dedicated to the development of affordable housing.
Steve is survived by his brothers, Rick (Trish) and Chris (Leslie); children, Todd (Rosalee) and Tara; his children’s mother, Jill Comstock; grandchildren Todd, Camren, Tafsir, Sophia, Jazmine and Syan, great-grandson, Chance; his partner, Debra Yogodzinski and innumerable, much beloved, nieces, nephews and friends.
He loved dogs, boats, travel, beach vacations, red wine, theater and all sports, and was affectionately known to many as “The Admiral”.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the ASPCA, the Capital Area Food Bank, or a charity of your choice.
A private family service will be held at Gawler’s Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled on a date to be determined. Steve's page will be updated with information on the Celebration of Life in the future.
