

Dr. Selig Kainer, PhD Of Washington, DC, 88, passed away on May 28th, 2017. A Physicist, Playwright, and Novelist, he was the co-founding director of the Bleecker Street Players, in Washington, D.C., a theater for new plays. Productions were mounted at Grace Church in Georgetown. Several of his own plays were produced there, in addition to plays of others. He also wrote two original musicals for children that were performed at the John Eaton School. He brought theater to Chestnut Lodge by working with residents to stage dramatic scenes. He is the author of Brothers in Exile, a novel about the lives and loves of Thomas and Heinrich Mann. He received his doctorate in physics from New York University and worked for many years at the Naval Research Laboratory and at NASA. He also served as a research consultant at the University of Maryland. He received his Bachelors of Science from City College where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Selig was a Korean War Veteran. He was born in New York City on May 29, 1929 and grew up in the Bronx. Selig is survived by Dr. Rochelle Kainer, his appreciative and loving wife of fifty-eight years; his daughter, Dr. Eden Kainer, an AmeriCorps VISTA program manager and violinist; his son-in-law, Dr. Stephen Kadlecek, a physicist and violinist; and his granddaughter, Eloise. He is also survived by his sister Sheila Walpin of New York City. Memorial Service followed by a Visitation Reception will be on Sun June 4th, Joseph Gawlers 5130 Wisconsin Avenue at 3:00 pm.
