Sally A. Shroyer, a mathematics teacher who retired in 1987 after 25 years of teaching in area schools, died Thursday April 9, 2015. She was 87. Among the area schools where she taught were Mt. Vernon Seminary, National Ballet School, National Cathedral School, and American University. She taught the first class in calculus and also brought the first computer to National Cathedral School in 1972.
Mrs. Shroyer was born in Ames, Iowa, and moved to Washington, DC during World War II. She attended Western High School and was graduated from the Helen Bush School in Seattle Washington in 1945. She earned her BA degree from Sweet Briar College and an MS from American University.
Active in volunteer work, Mrs. Shroyer was treasurer of the Cathedral Flower Mart in 1981 and 1982, Vice Chairman of the Washington Assembly in 1955 and 1956 and a member of the Board of the Florence Crittenton Home. She was a choir member at St. David's Episcopal Church from 1955 to 1998. She was also on the Altar Guild and Flower Guild at St. David's, and was a member of the vestry from 1995 to 1999. She was a member of the Sumner Garden Club since 1957.
She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, The National Society of Colonial Dames of America in the state of Maryland, the Washington Committee for which she was treasurer from 1996 to 2006, and she was a docent at Dumbarton House.
She is preceded in death by her late husband of 64 years, Louis Shroyer III, and is survived by her two sons Louis W. Shroyer IV of Chevy Chase, Maryland and Andrew W. Shroyer of Rockville, Maryland, a half-sister Marsha Ayres of Charlottesville, VA, and a half-brother Quincy Whitfield Ayres of McLean, VA, four grandchildren: Matthew Louis Shroyer, Justin Edward Shroyer and Thomas Michael Shroyer, all of Germantown, Maryland and Natalie Ayres Shroyer of McLean, VA
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday April 18, 2015 at 3pm at St. David’s Episcopal Church 5150 Macomb Street NW Washington, DC. Burial to take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions in Sally A. Shroyer’s name be made to St. David’s Church.
