Rebecca Edge Mann (b. 10/25/1980) died on Tuesday, October 10, 2023 at the age of 42 from cancer. After surviving breast cancer in 2022, she was struck with an unrelated and incurable bile duct cancer in June. The tumors were unresponsive to chemotherapy. Rebecca showed amazing grace and courage through this ordeal. She died at home, surrounded by her family and close friends.
Rebecca was born and grew up on Capitol Hill. She attended Capitol Hill Day School followed by The Field School where she discovered her passion for photography. She took this interest to Tufts University, where she majored in both psychology and photography and became a creative, focused and discerning photographer.
Interweaving her artistic talents and her fascination with the human experience, she earned graduate degrees in Architecture and Interior Architecture at the University of Oregon, where her relationship with Gil, a friend from her childhood, also developed.
They moved back to DC where she practiced architecture and they established a loving home. She and Gil were married in June, 2014, and their son, Esta, was born in 2016. Rebecca was an especially loving wife and took great joy in becoming a mother.
Rebecca’s parents instilled in her a love for travel at a young age; she always found great satisfaction in visiting new places and documenting them through her camera lens. Exploring the world was a passion she was keen to share with her son.
Rebecca had many, many close friends. A tireless correspondent, her letters, postcards, and photographs never left her friends or family with any doubt of the place they occupied in her heart or of her shrewd sense of humor.
It is a testament to Rebecca’s loyal, generous and compassionate nature, how many people have supported her in these past 3 months, making sure that she never felt alone and got the best care possible.
Rebecca is survived by her husband Gil Gallagher, son Esta Gallagher, sister Sarah Edge Mann, mother Deborah Edge, and father Neal Mann as well as many other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held at The Field School, Sun Nov 12 at 10am. This is a family friendly event.
Rebecca requested that contributions in her memory be used to establish a travel fund for Esta or be made to The American Cancer Society.
