Matthew McLoughlin was born in Dublin, Ireland on October 5, 1934. He was raised in the Phibsborough neighborhood of Dublin, and he grew up in the house located above Hanlon’s Pub on the North Circular Road where his father, William McLoughlin, worked for 64 years. He attended Belvedere School and Blackrock College in Dublin.
He began his career as an accountant at M. H. Gill and Sons in Dublin, and it was there that he met and fell in love with Helen “Eilis” Cottrell. They married on December 27, 1962, and two days later, the couple set off for a new life in America.
After living in New Jersey for a few years, Matt and Eilis moved to Atlanta, Georgia, which would be their home for the next 55 years. Matt rose through the ranks at Scripto, Inc., eventually heading up the company’s international sales efforts. His job brought him to all 48 states in the continental U.S. and 69 foreign countries. In 1991, Matt accepted a position at Swedish Match, Inc., where he worked for decades on product liability cases.
Matt and Eilis loved antiques, and they operated “Arsenic and Old Lace” antiques in Chamblee, GA for nearly 30 years. Matt was also an avid gardener, a loyal fan of the Atlanta Braves and Falcons, and a fascinating storyteller. He was a devout Catholic, and was a member of St. Patrick’s church in Norcross, Ga. and later of St. Benedict’s church in John’s Creek, Ga.
In late 2021, after developing a number of health issues, Matt moved with Eilis to Bethesda, MD to be closer to their daughter.
Matt is survived by his loving wife of nearly 60 years, Eilis McLoughlin, his daughter, Tara McLoughlin, his grandson Liam Garvin, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Andrew McLoughlin, and his parents William and Elizabeth McLoughlin.
