Born outside of Seattle, WA (Bremerton) in 1929 and passed away on February 19, 2015. She later moved to Washington, DC to attended George Washington University. She was a resident of the Dupont Circle neighborhood for 50 years, she treasured her lifelong friendships with her neighbors on Riggs Place. She loved her Lord, Christ and her Greek Orthodox Church. A journalist and photographer, she worked for the Associated Press and for Booth Newspapers. She loved life, people and was an avid world traveler. Fluent in Mandarin Chinese, Greek, and Arabic and she was learning Spanish. She was an enthusiastic sportswoman; she played tennis, skied, swam and sailed. She was an accomplished belly dancer and instructor. She is survived by a daughter, Lisa Carey (Ron) and grandson, Jordan. Also survived by a brother, David Vance. Relatives and friends are invited to call at JOSEPH GAWLERS SONS, LLC, 5130 Wisconsin Ave., NW (corner of Harrison St.), Washington, DC on Tuesday, February 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. with prayers at 6:30 p.m. Services will be held at Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 36th St. & Massachusetts Ave., NW on Wednesday, February 25 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Silver Spring, MD.
