Passed away peacefully on Friday, March 6, 2015 at her home in Chevy Chase, MD. Her husband of 51 years, George N. Catakis passed away on August 23, 1983. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Amelia Catakis. Mrs. Catakis was born in Archanes, Iraklion Crete. She came to the United States in October of 1920, with her mother and sister to meet her father in Hopewell, VA. In January 1932 she married her husband and moved to Washington, DC. She was a devoted wife, mother and daughter. She was a member of Saint Sophia Church, and then Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral for over 80 years. Mrs. Catakis was predeceased by her parents, John and Styliane Nisos; three brothers, Michael (1922), Nicholas and Michael; her sister and brother-in-law, Kaleroe and George Kaparakis. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and dear friends in United States, Greece and England. Mary Catakis will be remembered for her generous spirit, her love and caring for others, and her deep religious convictions. May her memory be eternal. Family and friends are invited to call at Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 36th St. & Massachusetts Ave., NW, Washington, DC on Tuesday, March 10 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. followed by funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Silver Spring, MD. Contributions in her name may be made to Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Montgomery County Hospice and St. Jude's Hospital for Children.
