McGARRY Martha Boone McGarry of Chevy Chase, Maryland, died on May 30, 2011, following a courageous journey in her battle against cancer. Martha was born in Durham, North Carolina, the daughter of the late Demetrius Leonard Boone, Jr. and Elinor Dunham Boone. She graduated from Yorktown High School in Arlington, VA, received her undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina and her law degree from the University of Virginia. Martha practiced law in the DC area at Shaw Pittman, until she moved to Winchester, MA in 1988. In 2000, she returned to the Washington area and was very active in church and community work as well as serving as a committed volunteer in her children's schools. Martha was known for her generous spirit, good humor, and gracious hospitality. Her positive outlook and enthusiasm for life was contagious to all who knew and loved her. She enjoyed designing interior spaces and landscapes. She was an avid traveler and especially enjoyed family vacations and reunions with her many devoted friends. She is survived by her husband, David McGarry; her son, William McGarry, and daughter Elinor (Ellie) McGarry. She was pre-deceased by her infant daughter, Elizabeth McGarry. She is also survived by her mother, Elinor Dunham Flint of Hilton Head, South Carolina; two sisters, Susanne Lake Query and husband Dick of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, and Lizette Boone Steinbrueck of Denver, Colorado, as well as many nieces and nephews. A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, Norwood Parish in Chevy Chase, Md. on Tuesday, June 7 at 10:30am. The family will greet friends following the service. A private burial will be in Durham, North Carolina.
