Kathryn Stackpole Cleaves Burke passed away on July 25, 2012 in Washington, DC. The loving wife of Daniel Barlow Burke for 42 years, Kathy was the proud mother of two sons, Benjamin of Littleton, Colorado and Daniel of Bangor, Maine. She is also survived by four grandchildren Emma, Lauren, Larsson, and James Burke and her two sisters Vickery Cleaves of Alna, Maine and Yarrow Anne Cleaves of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and many other friends and loved ones.
Daughter of the late Florence and Richard Cleaves, Kathy was born on November 24, 1946, in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Graduating from Bethesda Chevy Chase High School in 1964 and from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1968, she worked as the graphic designer for the University of Rhode Island and then, moving to Washington, as the publications designer for the Library of Congress from 1971 to 1975. With the birth of her sons, she pursued freelance graphic design and calligraphy, photography, and quilt design and restoration. She was an avid quilter and a past president of her quilt guild, Chevy Chase Needle Chasers.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 10, 2012, in the Washington National Cathedral’s Great Choir, Wisconsin and Massachusetts Aves., N.W., Washington, D.C.
