James Louis Albrecht, beloved husband, father, and grandfather; long-time resident of Lake Bluff, Illinois; 30-year employee at Abbott Laboratories; and devoted alumnus of Knox College, passed away on February 10, 2021.
Jim was born in St. Louis and raised in Southern Illinois. His father Louis was killed in an automobile accident when Jim was only five. Jim and his younger brother Bob were raised by their mother, Mabel Unger Albrecht.
After graduating from Lincoln Community High School, in Lincoln, Illinois, Jim and Bob both attended Knox College in Galesburg. There Jim met the love of his life, Phyllis Holowaty Albrecht. Jim was a leader in the ROTC program at Knox, and served two years as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army at Fort Lewis WA. Jim and Phyllis were married in 1956, and enjoyed 58 loving years together before Phyllis died in 2015.
Jim is survived by his three children, Ann Albrecht Michel and her husband Scott Michel (Washington DC); Karen Albrecht (Paris, France), and James M. Albrecht and his wife Lisa Marcus (Gig Harbor WA); his grandchildren: Stephen Michel and his wife Jeanne Hanna, Jeffrey Michel and his wife Ana, Gregory Michel, and Hannah and Cecily Albrecht; and his great grand-daughter, Rory Michel.
Jim earned an MBA from Indiana University and a law degree from DePaul University. He and Phyllis moved to Lake Bluff in 1964, where they lived for 50 years. They were long-time members of Lake Bluff’s Grace United Methodist Church. Jim took a position as a lawyer for Abbott Laboratories Legal Division in 1964, and served in that office with distinction for more than 30 years, until his retirement in 1997.
When Jim was in his mid-thirties, he suffered a significant hearing loss. He showed grace and perseverance in coping with his disability, maintaining an active social life and successful legal career. At age 65, he received a cochlear implant, when that procedure was still experimental. He was able to hear for the first time in decades, which remarkably enriched his retirement years.
Jim and Phyllis purchased a home in Marco Island, Florida, and enjoyed fifteen wonderful years splitting their time between Marco and Lake Bluff. In 2014 they relocated to Maryland, to be near their eldest daughter Ann. Jim and Phyllis were true Illinoisans: devoted and active community members in their beloved Lake Bluff (where Phyllis was a pioneering woman in local government), and generous benefactors to Knox College.
Jim was a gentle, humble, and loving man. He displayed great intelligence, optimism, and resilience, and was admired and well-liked by all who knew him. He was a kind and loving father, uncle, and “Papa.”
