September 8, 1927- February 5, 2018
Elizabeth Schubert passed away peacefully on Monday, Feb. 5, 2018. A beloved wife, sister, aunt and great aunt, Elizabeth was an avid book lover from the time she started to read. She graduated from the University of Virginia with a BA in English Literature and worked in the Rare Books and Manuscripts library at UVA. She also appeared in Charlottesville’s Virginia Players theater productions in the early 1960’s and her love of theater led to her later role as a dedicated volunteer with the Kennedy Center for 10 years.
Born in London, Elizabeth moved to the US in 1960 and settled in Charlottesville, VA, later spending weekends in Washington DC and finally moving permanently to DC in 2000. In London, she worked for BBC TV on the set of a 1950’s interview series dedicated to authors and literature. Having lived through WWII in England as a teenager, Elizabeth was also very opposed to war and marched in several anti-war protests in DC during the 1960’s. She adored animals and felt strongly that they should be treated humanely.
Elizabeth was loved by all who met her, and her gracious, kind, gentle and witty spirit will never be forgotten by those whose lives she touched. She is survived by her sister Anne R. Janney; nephews Edward (Natalie Avery) Janney, Eli (Jennifer Ballard) Janney, and Matthew (Emma) Hill; niece Elizabeth (Jeffrey) DeRose; great nieces Kaya DeRose, Alessandra DeRose, Vera Janney, Esther Hill and Robyn Hill; great nephews Jackson Janney, Ryall Janney, Ronin Janney and Stanley Hill. Elizabeth is predeceased by her husband Franz Schubert, her sister Jean (Ken) Hill, brothers Alan Ryall, William Ryall and Colin Ryall, and nephew Sam Hill. She held a special place in her heart for her extended Charlottesville family, Page Turner, Erinn Scheibel, Julia Scheibel and Levi Scheibel.
A funeral service will be held at Annunciation Catholic Church, 3810 Massachusetts Ave. Washington, DC on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018 at 1:00pm. A reception in the Parish Center will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the ASPCA, https://secure.aspca.org/donate/ or 800-628-0028.
