Dorothy Mack LeGendre, age 99, was born in Meriden and lived there her entire life. She was the beloved wife of the late Ralph Job LeGendre for 68 years. She was reunited with her loving husband on October 27, 2018.
Born September 22, 1919 in Meriden, Dorothy was the daughter of the late George and Myra (Remington) Mack. She graduated from Meriden High School in 1936 and from Pequod Business School. She worked as a private secretary at Herco Art Mfg. Co. For many years she managed the business aspects of LeGendre Farms, and later, for 25 years, she was Office Manager for Guida Seibert Dairy Company, retiring in 1982.
In 1941, she married Ralph LeGendre, her best friend and only love, and stayed home to raise their three children. It was during that time, from home, that she set up and managed a formal accounting system for the family dairy business. She was a member of Center Congregational Church for 67 years where she sang in the Sanctuary Choir, was a deaconess, usher, collector, Chorister Choir mother, President of Mother’s Club, and served on numerous committees.
She will be sadly missed by her three children: Sharon Allen of Sacramento, CA, Ellen Warren and husband Dr. David Warren of Washington DC, and Dr. Gary LeGendre and wife Patti Sue of Portland, OR, her six grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, sister-in-law, Mary Lou Mack, who was like a sister to her, many devoted nieces, nephews, cousins (especially Joan Mack Gordon who was always so helpful), and many wonderful friends and neighbors. She was pre-deceased by husband Ralph, sisters, Evelyn Caplan, Shirley Gohr, and Arline Scofield, brothers George and James Mack, son-in-law, Donald Allen, sister-in-law, Irene Mack, and brothers-in-law, F. Robert Scofield, Fred Gohr and Dr. Max Caplan.
Known to her friends as Dot, she loved feeding and watching the birds outside her kitchen window, baking bread, and gardening, sharing her fruits and vegetables with family, friends and neighbors. She was an expert at word games such as Scrabble and the daily crossword puzzles and Crypto-Quotes in the morning newspaper. Until several years ago, she enjoyed knitting and crocheting, and in her earlier years, made ceramics and was an accomplished seamstress. She was an avid fan of UConn women’s basketball and the Boston Red Sox. She lived her entire adult life on North Wall Street and Baldwin Avenue where she was well known in the neighborhood as a committed environmentalist, walking 2-3 miles each day, picking up litter along the way to keep Baldwin Avenue clean. She had recently moved to Sunrise Senior Living in Washington, DC to be closer to family there.
Plans for a memorial service are incomplete and will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Center Congregational Church, 474 Broad Street, Meriden, CT 06450
Burial will be private.
