Prominent Washington, D.C. banker, loving husband, father and friend
Daniel J. Callahan, III, 83, died peacefully on December 30, 2015 at the home he shared with his wife of 59 years, Colleen Mount Callahan.
Mr. Callahan was a fourth generation Washingtonian. He was an Insignis Medal recipient at Georgetown Preparatory School (1950), a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity at Williams College (B.A.) (1954), served 4 years in the ROTC, and served in the United States Air Force retiring as a Captain (1954-1956).
He held positions with many financial institutions over his long career in banking, including Chairman of American Security Bank, President of Riggs National Bank and an executive of Chase Manhattan Bank.
Mr. Callahan’s most recent position was as Treasurer and Vice Chairman of The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation of Washington, D.C. He had many business interests and held various board positions including Chairman of the Greater Washington Research Center, Vice Chairman of the Atlantic Council, Director Emeritus of Easter Seals Greater Washington-Baltimore Region, Inc., Independent Director of Washington Mutual Investors Fund Inc. and Director of Washington Gas Light Company and WGL Holdings Inc.
Mr. Callahan’s spiritual faith was an important and sustaining force throughout his life. He supported numerous charitable organizations. In 1991, he was bestowed the honor of Knight Commanders of the Order of St. Gregory the Great by Pope John Paul II; Cardinal James Hickey announced the papal honors.
He is predeceased by his son, Daniel J. Callahan, IV, his sister, Gerry Callahan Corcoran, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel J. Callahan, Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Colleen Mount Callahan; his children, Carey S. Callahan, Caren A. Callahan, Carolyn Callahan Keller, Colleen Callahan Brown; nine grandchildren; three great-grandsons; and his sisters, Joanne McClure and Mary Alicia Callahan.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle, 1725 Rhode Island Ave., NW, Washington, D.C., 20036 at 1:00 PM on Monday, January 4, 2016.
Immediately following the Mass, friends will be received at the Mayflower Hotel, 1127 Connecticut Ave., NW, Washington, D.C. 20036.
The Internment will be private for family only.
