Charlotte Leedy, 83, died May 22, 2011, at her Knollwood Terrace home, Army Distaff Hall, Washington, D.C. Born July 13, 1927, at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC, she was the daughter of the late Col. Myron and Daisy Leedy. She is survived by Gavin (brother) and Gin Leedy, Harry Friberg (brother-in-law), Barbara (niece) and Richard Braskett, Col. Harry (nephew) and Lynn Friberg, Lindy Paull (niece), great nieces and nephews, and a host of loyal friends. She was predeceased by Myron Leedy (brother) and Daisy Friberg (sister).
Charlotte attended Alice Deal Junior High School in Washington, D.C. and graduated from Columbus High School in Columbus, GA. She earned B.S. and M.A. degrees from the University of Maryland and a doctorate degree from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA.
A long term volunteer and employee of the American Red Cross, Charlotte served in Germany, Japan, Korea, and France providing services for the U.S. Armed Forces, Clubmobile, and Franco-American Center programs. Following her time with the Red Cross, she joined the faculty of the University of Maryland for 17 years until she retired in 1988. She then moved to Athens, GA, where she was an adjunct faculty member at the University of Georgia, and an active member of the community. She returned to Washington, D.C. about 10 years ago.
Charlotte served in numerous volunteer positions, including President of the Maryland Recreation and Parks Association, the vestries of All Saints Church (Chevy Chase, MD) and Emmanuel Episcopal Church (Athens, GA); the boards of AIDS Athens, Athens Symphony Orchestra, Athens Regional Library, League of Women Voters, East Georgia Chapter of the American Red Cross; Vice Regent, Elijah Clarke Chaper of the Daughters of the American Revolution; Vice President of the Knollwood Residents Association and served on the Chapel, House and Emergency Planning committees.
Charlotte's honors and awards include being the 3rd woman to receive the Silver Medal of Verdun, as well as Leadership Athens and Athena awards.
A service celebrating Charlotte's life will be held at Knollwood Chapel, 6200 Oregon Avenue, N.W., on Friday, May 27, 2011, at 10:30 a.m., with a reception immediately following the service. Another service will be held in Athens, GA, at a later date. Interment will be at Oconee Hills Cemetary, Athens, GA.
In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made to the Army Distaff Foundation, 6200 Oregon Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C. 20015, or the American Red Cross chapter of your choice.
