Ray Tyler died on June 6, 2017 in Bethesda, Md. His wife of 65 years, Ruth Nash, survives him.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio he was a World War II veteran, serving seven years in the US Marine Corps. Ray was on Midway Island on December 7, 1941 when the Japanese attacked and was also on Midway during the June 1942 naval Battle of Midway. While still in the Marines he became a writer – photographer for the Marine Corps “Leatherneck” magazine serving in China for two years. After World War II he attended The George Washington University and graduated with a degree in Business and Economics.
In 1959 (with $600) he established Tyler Business Services, Inc. with a ream of paper, a typewriter, and a mimeograph machine. It thrived and is now owned and operated by one of his daughters.
Besides his wife, two daughters survive Kathryn (Marcia Hoffman), and Charlotte (David Colvin) and a nephew, Robert Tyler.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on June 22, 2016 at Joseph Gawler’s Sons Funeral Home 5130 Wisconsin Avenue with burial at a later date in Cherryfield, Maine.
