Anne Ryall Janney passed away peacefully at home on April 12, 2024 with her three children by her side. Born and raised in London, England, Anne was evacuated to St. Alban’s, England for three years during WWII. Anne attended the University of Edinburgh and received an M.A. in History and Economics in 1947, a Social Studies Diploma in 1948 and a Child Care Certificate from the London School of Economics in 1949. She began her career as a Social Worker in London and worked with children in the British foster care system. In 1958, Anne moved to America as a nanny for a family friend’s three children in Charlottesville, VA. Anne later became a Medical Social Worker for the University of Virginia in 1960. She married John Randolph Janney, III in 1962 and then moved to Washington, DC the following year to start her family.
Anne continued her education at American University and received a Masters of Education with a focus on Special Education in Reading in May 1978. Her career in education included positions as a Lecturer at Northern Virginia Community College and Adjunct Professor at Montgomery County Community College. Anne later followed her love of research and books to become a library technician at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, then a Senior Librarian for more than 15 years at the Department of Veterans Affairs, from which she retired in 2004.
Anne will be remembered for her loving spirit, captivating storytelling prowess, dedication to her family and friends, her love of children, and her unparalleled love of books. Her joy of life, kindness, thoughtfulness, and sense of wonder will be missed dearly by all those who knew her.
Anne is survived by her three children, Edward Janney (Natalie Avery), Elizabeth Janney DeRose (Jeff DeRose), Eli Janney (Jennifer Ballard), her stepdaughter Page Turner, her grandchildren Kaya DeRose, Alessandra Skye DeRose, Jackson Janney, Vera Valentine Janney, Ryall Janney, Ronin Janney, Erinn Scheibel, Julia Scheibel and Levi Scheibel. She is predeceased by her husband of 55 years and her younger siblings, Elizabeth Schubert, Jean Hill, Alan Ryall, William Ryall and Colin Ryall.
Memorial Services will be held at St. Columba’s Episcopal Church, 4201 Albemarle St NW Washington, DC on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to St, Jude Children’s Research Hospital, www.st.jude.org.
