Almuth Rott Ewing died on July 10, 2022, aged 84. The daughter of Karl Klaus Rott and Ingeborg Maximiliane Rott (born Fiévèt), she was born in Berlin, Germany on July 3, 1938. After training in chemistry in Munich, Germany, she emigrated to the United States and worked as a chemist in Dr. Nathan Zvaifler's arthritis research lab at Georgetown University School of Medicine.
Almuth married Ky P. Ewing, Jr. in 1963. After the birth of their first child in 1964, she retired from chemistry to raise him and, eventually, two other children in Carderock Springs. Almuth was active in community affairs, establishing a community childcare program, publishing a community newsletter, and serving as an officer of both the Carderock Springs Swim & Tennis Club and the Carderock Springs Civic Association. When her children were grown, she took up a career in the travel industry, working for Atlantic Fellowship, focusing on Germany. After retiring a second time, she accompanied Ky on many business trips, particularly for the American Bar Association's Section of Antitrust Law, and many ocean cruises in North and South America, Europe, and Antarctica. After diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, she became active in the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Center's pancreatic cancer support network.
Throughout her life, with genuineness and open heart, she and Ky created many deep friendships spanning continents and generations. Together they welcomed friends into their lives and home, providing loving support in times of need and hosting innumerable joyous gatherings, with prosecco!
Almuth is survived by her dear sister Gesine de Wolf, by the three children, Kenneth Ewing (and his wife Sovaida Ma'ani), Kevin Ewing (and his wife Alison), and Kathryn Ewing, and by three dearly loved grandchildren, Andrew, Giselle, and Emily.
A funeral service will be held at St. Francis Episcopal Church in Potomac, Maryland, on August 13, 2022, at 11:00 am, with interment there in a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Johns Hopkins Sydney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center or to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, in either case designated for pancreatic cancer research.
