Thomas H. McGovern III, age 81, passed away October 6, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Deborah A. (Morris-Deery) McGovern to whom he was happily married for 14 years and the late Carol A. (Melanson) McGovern.
Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Thomas H. McGovern Jr. and Helen E. (Scott) McGovern.
Tom was a graduate of Classical High School, Boston College and the Wharton School of Business where he received his MBA in Finance.
He had a varied career beginning with the IBM Company directly out of Wharton. For the next 50+ years he worked for a large number of companies as a professional salesman and sales manager. He found his greatest professional joy as a serial entrepreneur involved in the starting of 4 companies beginning in the early 1980s through the mid-2000s. He took tremendous pride in the fact that through his efforts and those of people who worked with him in these startup enterprises, they were able to provide good paying jobs for all the employees.
Tom also took pride in his public service, first serving in the U.S. Army Intelligence Corps during the Vietnam War, retiring as a 1st Lieutenant. He also served as a Councilman for the City of Warwick from 1977 to 1985 and was the minority member of the Finance committee throughout his tenure. His faith meant a great deal to him and he proudly served as an usher at the St. Gregory the Great Church for the many years that he was a member of the parish.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his children Thomas H. McGovern IV and his wife Jane, Michele Gilbert and her husband James, and Scott J. McGovern and his wife Marianne; grandchildren Trevor Le McGovern, Andrew Le McGovern, Isabel Le McGovern, Madison McGovern Gilbert, Kendal McGovern Gilbert, and Bayley A. McGovern; stepchildren Patrick Deery and his wife Jennifer, Andrew Deery, Christopher Deery and his wife Christina, and Matthew Deery and his wife Natasha; step-grandchildren Connor, Cameron, Cooper, Kennedy, Julian, Ryan, Melanie, Matthew and Mariana Deery; brother Mark McGovern; and several sister in laws, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother David S. McGovern.
Tom will be dearly missed by his loving wife, family, and friends until we meet again.
Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday October 17, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. in the St. Gregory the Great Church, 360 Cowesett Rd, Warwick. Burial will be private.
