He was born December 7, 1942 in Providence, RI to George W. and A. Helene (Armstrong) Whelan.
Joe grew up in his beloved Smith Hill section of Providence where he made many friends and met his wife, Margaret. They were married for 58 years.
He is survived by his children, Theresa (Michael) Holahan, Patricia (Michael) Landy, and Joseph (Maryjane) Whelan. Joe was Grandpa to Seamus, Chloe, Ryan, and Lukas Landy; and Sarah, Kate, and Timothy Whelan. He also leaves his brothers William, Robert(Dorothy), Stephen(Joanne), David(Linda), and John Whelan.
Joe loved Friar basketball and the Red Sox; even if he insisted they were the worst team in baseball. He was a 43 year summer resident at Roy Carpenter’s Beach, which was a great summer retreat from his
32 years working for “Narragansett Electric”.
If Joe liked you, you knew it. And if he loved you, you know you were better for having him in your life. This world will be less interesting without him in it.
Joe’s visitation will be held on Monday, April 24th from 4:00 – 7:00 pm in the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 142 Centerville Road (Rte. 117) Warwick.
