John W. Hogan, Jr., formerly of Woodmont Village of Milford, CT and New Haven, CT, passed away on November 10, 2023, after years battling Alzheimer’s. His wife, Katie, of 61 years, was by his side on his last day.
Born on February 22, 1939, in New Haven, CT, a city he loved and devoted himself to throughout his life, John was the child of John W. Hogan Sr. and Mary Leahy Hogan. John grew up on Ridge Road just behind East Rock in Hamden, CT. From 1946 – 1948, Rheumatic Fever left John bedridden, but his joy of learning continued. He developed a love of reading, especially biographies, and the radio nurtured his passion for baseball and the Red Sox.
John attended St. Mary’s High School, New Haven, and went on to College of the Holy Cross (Class of 1961). He was especially proud to be the second of his family to graduate from college, following his older sister Mary Jane Thompson. While a student at Holy Cross, he met his future wife, Katie Menadier. They were married in 1962. He received his law degree from University of Connecticut in 1964 and immediately started practicing law, beginning a long 50-year career in New Haven. John’s love of his community was demonstrated in his service to others. He served as a board member, advisor, counsel, and volunteer for many organizations, including the Boards of The Hospital of St. Raphael’s and The Shubert Theater. He also served as Chairman of the New Haven Development Commission, and Counsel to Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce and its Charitable Foundation. Among his many professional achievements, he was elected President of the Connecticut Bar Association from 2003-2004. John completed his legal career with his work at Berchem, Moses & Devlin, P.C., in Milford, CT as of counsel where he retired in 2015.
John’s life was defined not only by his professional success and community involvement but also by his adored family, beloved friends, and Catholic faith. John could regularly be seen walking to and from work and sitting on his porch on Livingston Street with his book or newspaper, greeting passers-by and neighbors. He could also be found jogging through the streets of his city where he trained for many road races including what he called his greatest athletic achievement, completing the Boston Marathon in 1983. Later in life, John found joy in travelling up and down the East Coast with Katie to visit his children and grandchildren, celebrating significant milestones and mundane daily events with the same pride and vigor.
John is survived by the love of his life, his wife Katie Hogan; his sister Mary Jane Thompson of Dover, NH; his brother James Hogan and his wife Pauline of Clinton, CT; and, his sister-in-law Rita Hogan of East Hartford, CT. He is survived by his four children; Joan Hogan Gillman and her husband Ted Gillman of Westport, CT; Stephanie Hogan Lee and her husband Michael Lee of Barrington, RI; John Peter Hogan of Washington, DC; and, Tad Hogan and his wife Kate Brawley Hogan of Trappe, MD. John is also survived by seven (7) grandchildren, Allison and Zachary Gillman, Nicholas (Kate) and Bowen (Meghan) Lee, Garrett, Gwen and Gus Hogan, and one great grandchild, John (Jack)Lee. He was predeceased by his brother Charles Hogan, and brothers-in-law Buddy Doyle and Robert Thompson. John is also survived by many nieces and nephews whom he proudly and tirelessly took to climb the Giant Steps of East Rock in New Haven during the holidays.
