Born in Fall River, a son of the late John S. and Mary (Lima) Mello, he had lived in Tiverton for many years before retiring to Florida and then moving back to Rhode Island two years ago.
A Veteran of the United States Navy, Fred served during World War II and was honorably discharged after two years of active duty. He loved traveling with his wife Betty, listening to country music and was a skilled ballroom dancer.
In addition to his wife survivors include: sister-in-law, Eleanor Vargas and her husband William; five nieces, Deborah Phaneuf, Lucretia Cardin, Tamara Bannon, Catherine Catudal and Jennifer Rodrigues; two nephews, Eric Jarvis and Edward Pereira and several great nieces and great nephews.
He was predeceased by brothers-in-law, Edward Pereira and Mario Pereira, Jr.
His funeral and burial will be private.
Arrangements are in the care of Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home, Warren.
