Walter Czebieniak, age 96, died Sunday, May 10, 2020 at Ascension St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital in Warren, Michigan. Walter was born August 14, 1923 in Reading, Pennsylvania, son of the late Andrew Czebieniak and the late Josephine (nee: Demczak) Czebieniak.
Walter was raised in Frackville, Pennsylvania, graduated from high school, and later entered the armed forces serving with the United States Navy. While undergoing Naval Training in Detroit, Walter studied chemistry and meteorology at Wayne University, now known as Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. His college career was put on hold as Walter was called to duty and deployed to serve his country during World War II from June of 1942 until his honorable discharge in January of 1946 with a final rank of Boatswain's Mate 1st Class with Amphibious Designation.
While in the Navy, Walter was identified as an accomplished swimmer and became a member of the United States Navy Scouts and Raiders (precursors to the Navy Seals), functioning in support of amphibious landings in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. He served aboard the USS Lyon and the USS Barnett in the European Theater, and the USS Venango in the Pacific Theater. He earned the Navy Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. With thanks and praise from a grateful nation, we honor Walter for his contribution to the war effort and extend our posthumous gratitude for his faithful and patriotic service. He truly was a part of our country's Greatest Generation.
Following his military service, Walter returned to Detroit and joined the workforce where he was employed at Chrysler Motors for over 40 years. Walter primarily worked in the metallurgy laboratory as a gas analyst at the Lynch Road facility and was an active member of his UAW local.
When Walter was away from work he could be found shore fishing or taking his sons to the Upper Peninsula to fish and explore the wilderness. He cherished his time with his family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. There were many times spent playing cards, solving crossword puzzles, enjoying board-games, or just watching old war movies on TV.
Walter was the beloved husband of the late Mary Czebieniak, and dear father of David Czebieniak, and the late Thomas (Elizabeth) Czebieniak. He was the loving grandfather of Neil (Kim) Czebieniak, Amelia Czebieniak, Caryn Czebieniak, Alana (Brandon) Michael, and great-grandfather of Nathaniel, Zayden, and Jay. He is also survived by many loving extended family members and friends.
Due to the current virus regulations, private services have taken place.
