Tammy Teresa Piotrowski, age 57 of Lincoln Park, died Saturday, September 19, 2020 at the Special Tree NeuroCare Center in Romulus, Michigan. She was born April 6, 1963 in Fayetteville, North Carolina, daughter of the late Burton Lafoy and the late Doris Teresa (nee: Hinson) Hughes.
Married at 25 to the love of her life, David, Tammy and her groom were blessed to share 32 years together as husband & wife, and doubly blessed when they welcomed their son Justin into the world,…making for a very elated Mom & Dad.
Following her high school years, Tammy had dreamt for a long time about continuing her educational path towards the goal of teaching, and so made that dream a reality by attending the famed Michigan State University in search of her teaching credentials. But not only did Tammy obtain those credentials and receive her Bachelor’s Degree, she set her sights even further and would ultimately earn her Master’s Degree as well. Education was most important in Tammy’s world, and she wanted, dearly, to share her wealth of knowledge with others, too. So, equipped with her degrees and a desire to impact the lives of her community, Tammy accepted a teaching position with Gesu Catholic School in Detroit where she touched and inspired the lives of countless children as a 1st Grade teacher for over 23 years.
Along with her work as a teacher at Gesu, Tammy was also quite involved with many of the extracurricular activities for the school as well. Always willing to pitch in and help where she could, Tammy was often the face you would see at many of the fund raising events for both the church and the school.
Considering she held two degrees, spending time with books was pretty familiar for Tammy,…but she also enjoyed recreational reading, too. When finding a little “me time” in the day, Tammy would often have been found curled up with a good book getting lost in the pages of a favorite genre-du-jour. And for as much as she liked to read, many will also remember the joy she found in singing as well. She seemed to always have a song in her heart, and treasured each moment she was able to let that music fly. Expressing herself in song simply came natural for Tammy, and she loved sharing her gift.
Many will also reflect on just how precious her love was for our “furry friends,”…the animal world. None-so-much as for the love she held for her dog, Lucy, a Beagle & German Shepherd mix,…Tammy’s adoration for the four-legged of the species reigned supreme and her heart was always open to playing the role of Mrs. Doolittle.
Yet of all her devotions in life, Tammy’s faith ran deep and wide, and was perhaps the most profound of all her traits. Devout in her Catholic beliefs, Tammy was infused with a giving spirit and had the heart of a servant. One of her greatest passions in life was serving God and helping others, the latter of which she did with a selfless and unconditional love.
A loving wife and mother, Tammy leaves us far too soon, but not without imparting the best of herself as she lived out each and every day. She adored her family and friends, all of whom were her greatest source of strength and support through the tough times, and the wind beneath her wings in the good times. Her legacy of love will forever shine in the hearts of those she touched along the way,…a love that will keep her close, always, with each reflection shared. She will be missed immensely and loved eternally.
Tammy was the beloved wife of David, and dearest mother of Justin. She was the loving sister of Lafoy Hughes, and the late Ronald Fields. Also survived by several loving nieces and nephews.
Visitation for Tammy will be held Thursday, September 24th from 3-9 pm at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 ½ Mile Rd) in Warren. She will lie in state on Friday from 10:00 am until time of her Funeral Mass at 11:00 am at Gesu Catholic Church, 17204 Oak Drive, Detroit, MI 48221.
