Melvin “Mel” Carroll Cowan, age 92, passed away on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, surrounded by family. He was born on December 24, 1931 in Buffalo Valley, Tennessee to the late Rufus Howard Cowan and Lorena Dow White.
Beloved husband of the late Joann “Jo” Alice (Wasiel) Cowan for sixty-five years; loving father of Keith (Julie) Cowan, Julie (Steven) Strika, and Bradley (Shannon) Cowan; proud papa of Sarah (Christopher) Melton, Daniel (Amelia) Cowan, Adam Cowan (Megan Pietrzyk), Allison (Sam) Plakmeyer, Lindsay Cowan (Devin Phelps), Rhett (Cynthia) Strika, and John Strika; devoted “great” papa of Ezekiel “Zeke” Plakmeyer; cherished brother of the late Evelyn Brown, Nathaleen “Nean” Cuzzort, and Robbie Dillon; dear brother-in-law of Ruben Gonzalez. Mel was loved by many friends and family members including nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to the high priority he and Jo placed on spending time with family and friends, Mel found great joy in gardening. With tender care and unwavering dedication, Mel nurtured his gardens into canvases of beauty which often caused passers-by to stop and take note. A life-long follower of Jesus Christ, Mel is now in the presence of his Savior. He will be sorely missed until we meet again.

A celebration of Mel’s life will be held on Saturday, July 27, 2024 at D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home located at 30009 Hoover Road in Warren, Michigan. Visitation will be from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm followed by a memorial service commencing at 3:00pm. In accordance with their wishes, Melvin and his beloved wife Joann will be inurned at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan.
