Leonard Ronald Hempel, a beloved father, husband, brother, grandpa, and great grandpa, of Eastpointe Michigan, passed away on March 22, 2025 at the age of 76. He was born on April 17,1948 in Detroit, Michigan.
As a proud General Motors assembly worker, he spent many years dedicated to his craft, and his work ethic was something that left an enduring impression on everyone who knew him.
Leonard’s greatest joy was being surrounded by his family. As a grandpa and papa, he was the heart of every gathering, sharing laughter, stories, and wisdom that will continue to echo in the hearts of those he loved. His presence was always a bright spot in any room, and he had a unique ability to make everyone feel special.
He was passionate about the things that brought him joy—whether it was enjoying a cold root beer schnapps, spending time at the bowling alley, or taking part in the excitement of the Woodward Dream Cruise. Leonard was also a devoted sports fan, always cheering on his favorite teams with unwavering enthusiasm. His love for the thrill of the casino was another of his well-known pleasures, where he could often be found trying his luck with a smile.
Leonard’s infectious laughter, quick wit, and genuine love for life will be greatly missed. While we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the incredible life he lived—one filled with laughter, love, and joy. Leonard leaves behind a legacy of fond memories that will be cherished by his children, grandchildren, extended family, and countless friends.
Leonard is survived by his four children Ronald Hempel, James (Rodney) Sims-Neeley, Kim (Chris) Vanchina, and Leonard R. Hempel. He leaves behind his beloved nieces and nephews Chris, Kathy, Susan, Timothy, and Bob Socha. His seven cherished grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. Beloved friends Jen (Jay) Harneck among many others. Leonard is predeceased by his loving wife Rosemary, mother Marianne, father Russell and dearest sister Joan.
A visitation will be held on Friday, March 28th from 3pm-7pm, and Saturday from 1pm-6pm with a rosary service to follow, at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 32000 Schoenherr Road, in Warren. A funeral mass will be held the following weekend, Saturday, April 5, at 11AM, at St. Raymond's Parish Catholic Church, 20103 Joann Avenue, in Detroit.
