Leona Gertrude Wright, age 96 of Sterling Heights, died Sunday, December 13, 2015 at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Clinton Township, Michigan. She was born February 9, 1919 in Detroit, daughter of the late William and the late Hedwig (nee: Schaedig) Gilbert.Employed as a Millinery, Leona's skill set was realized in the artful creation of hats. Her work was detailed and stylish, and the hats she produced became adornments of beauty for many people over the years. And though she wore the moniker of Hat Maker, her abilities to sew spanned a large scope as seamstress, and came in quite handy in the many outfits she made for herself as well. For a bit of fun and entertainment, Leona could often get swept away in her gaming favorites of Solitaire and Bingo. Whether it was satisfying a little alone time or seeking something more social, she had the best of both worlds at her beck and call. Yet of all the things that brought her the most joy, nothing could match the pleasures she found in those precious moments with family and friends,…especially the memories shared with her great nieces and nephews. To all those who truly knew this amazing lady, they'll surely attest to the "spunk" that made up Leona's eclectic personality. Throughout her golden years, it wasn't rare to experience a taste of her "bossy" side when it came to her meals. Quite often, with a commanding countenance, she would be heard stating; "Who's going to make my plate?" And, by God, there had better have been some dessert on that plate as well! But then there was her softer side, that unique and caring embodiment of the person that Kathy came to know and love. In Leona's latter years, Kathy was her caretaker,…the "angel" sent to abide with Leona, and the one who provided her a special friendship that enveloped Leona's heart. Most treasured were those memorable conversations that she and Kathy shared about family,…and in the process, Kathy became family too. Leona was the beloved wife of the late Maurice. Loving Aunt of Jim & Cindy Jenson, Kathy & Joe Burlager, Tony, Terri, Butch (George Ann), and Sandy. She is also survived by many loving great and great-great nieces and nephews. Visitation for Leona will be held on Wednesday, December 16th from 4:00 pm until the time of her Funeral Service at 4:30 pm at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 ½ Mile Rd) in Warren. Leona will be laid to rest at 12:00 pm on Friday, December 18th at Oakview Cemetery in Royal Oak, Michigan. Please share memories of Leona at her memory book above.
