James was raised on the family farm in Turner, Michigan where, as a boy, he worked the farm to help his family, along with hunting and fishing like many of the young farm boys in the area. At the age of 15, James felt compelled to serve his nation following the attack on Pearl Harbor, so he and some friends went down to the Army recruiting office and fibbed regarding their actual age and were inducted into the armed forces. James served in the United States Army from May 1942 until Oct 1942, attaining the rank of Private 1st Class before receiving his honorable discharge due to his young age.
Once he became of age, James again joined the military, serving in the United States Navy from December of 1942 until receiving his honorable discharge in February of 1945. He served on the USS Lunga Point CVE-94, receiving Medals for combat and bravery. He returned home to work for Chrysler, retiring after more than 35 years of faithful service.
James volunteered as a Church Usher for 50 years at Our Lady Queen of Heaven, and also volunteered at St. John Hospital for 20 years making popcorn and welcome packets. James was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and was an avid University of Michigan sports fan and avid Red Wing Hockey fan. He loved to travel to many exotic locations, and enjoyed every free moment spent with family and friends.
Lastly, sharing this short bio of James just wouldn't be replete without mentioning one of his favorite pastimes of "walking the mall" at Eastland in Harper Woods which he did for over 20 years....first with his late wife, Eugenie, and then with his companion, Irene. Yet aside from his loving mates, James also shared the exercising pleasure with many dear and wonderful friends he had made over the years while circling the mall and sharing conversation together. After those many years of walking & talking together, he leaves behind a host of those who remain to treasure his memory and reflect on the precious friendships that blossomed over time.
