The most important thing to Desmond besides being a dad to his girls was the patriotism he held for his country. Desmond served honorably in the United States Army from 1969 to 1970. During his time in the service, he proudly served in the Vietnam War in the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles.
When his kids Michelle and Mackenzie were born, some of the happiest memories they had together were of the simple trips to Belle Isle to feed the ducks and stringing beans. Desmond cherished any time they spent together.
A longtime member of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 154, Desmond supported fellow veterans in any way he could. There wasn’t a Veteran he passed by without thanking them for their service and listening to their stories.
He always kept in contact with extended family and friends. He always made it a point to be present for all special family and friends’ events. An avid food enthusiast, he enjoyed cooking, and knew the best places to eat across the USA.
He was always the life of the party, usually the one laughing the loudest and the hardest. Everyone would gather around to hear whichever grand story Desmond had to talk about either his life or something he had heard at any given time. Desmond never met a stranger. He was a true friend to all, with the kindest heart beyond measure.
An avid sports fan, he loved his local Detroit teams, especially the Tigers and the Lions, even in their losing years. He was also famous for his U of M football parties back in the day.
Desmond relished going to casinos. Win or lose, as long as Desmond was there, everyone had a good time.
He had a career with American Steel until its closure in the early 90’s. He then spent his time driving a truck for Mack Trailer, became an agent for the TSA, a security guard at Selfridge Air National Guard Base and retired from TACOM in Warren as a security specialist.
A beloved fiancé, father, brother, uncle, and friend, Desmond will be missed dearly by all who knew him. Beloved dad of Michelle McClure (daughter of Lilly Anne), and Mackenzie McClure (daughter of Faye McClure). Loving fiancé of MaryRose Sergus. Dear brother of Donald (the late Barbara) McClure, Susie (Michael) Haggerty, Jennifer (Chris) Henderson, and step-siblings Howard (Detra), Rhonda, and the late Cissy.
Affectionately known as “Uncle Des” to many nieces, nephews, and many others.
Visitation for Desmond will be held Saturday, June 1st from 2pm until 8pm, and Sunday, June 2nd from 2pm until 8pm with a eulogy service for friends and family on Sunday starting at 5:15pm with Honor Guard to stand guard until the pass by at 7:00 pm at A.H.
