Arthur Joseph Miller, Jr., age 73 of Warren, passed away Thursday, June 25, 2020 with his best friend and beloved wife of 50 years next month by his side. He was born July 11, 1946 in Detroit, to Arthur and Edna Miller.
He graduated from Eastern Michigan University and entered into a proud life of public service continuing the family tradition started by his beloved parents, Art Sr., the first mayor of Warren and Edna, the first female elected Macomb County Clerk. In 1971, at 25 years of age, Art Jr. was elected President of the Warren City Council.
In 1977, Art won election to the Michigan State Senate and became the voice for a much larger constituency, a position he held for 26 years until term limits forced Senator Miller to leave office. Art served over 10 years as Democratic Leader in the Senate.
In 2002, Art established his own consulting business, Leadership Consultants. Proving his likeability, Art was hired by his former political opponent, Mayor Mark Steenberg, to represent the City of Warren in 2005. Art’s firm was still active and represented Warren at the time of his passing.
Warren’s Mayor Jim Fouts noted, “Art has been a strong voice for Warren government and its citizens as he fought to keep our revenue sharing and confronted bad legislation. He single-handedly did more effective representation for Warren than all of our representatives and senators in Lansing. He was a professional with a passion for getting things done. He is irreplaceable and will be greatly missed.”
While in office, Art Miller championed many different causes and issues, with his passions devoted to Public Education, Public Safety, and Labor Rights. A quote from his friend and longtime Macomb County Commissioner, Marvin Sauger reads, “Art never turned down a request to do something good for someone. He rarely had opposition in Lansing because no one wanted to run against him. He was a class act who served Warren residents with pride and dignity.” These sentiments were echoed by longtime friends U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow and former Michigan Governor John Engler in calls to Art’s wife Marsha.
Whether Art was in the halls of the State Capitol or home with his family at Theo’s restaurant, he could be heard arguing why Detroit’s sports teams should be more successful. As for participating in sports, Art loved hunting and fishing with his sons and golfing with his wife and only grandson. In addition, regardless of the season, he always appreciated the beauty of Northern Michigan with his family.
Over everything else, as a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, Art valued the meaning of family.
Art was the beloved husband of Marsha. Dearest father of Holly (Ross) Rocheleau, Nicole (Matt) Price, Arthur III (Stephanie) Miller, and Derek (Katie) Miller. Loving grandfather of Grace, Griffin, Celine, Victoria, Sophia, Viviana, Dakota, Savannah and Rosie. Brother of Tom, Bill, Cynthia, and Jennifer. He was preceded in death by his father Art, mother Edna, and brother Tim.
Visitation for Art will be held Tuesday, June 30th from 2-9 pm at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 ½ Mile Rd) in Warren.
Art will lie in state on Wednesday from 10:30 am until time of the Funeral Mass at 11:00 am at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church, 31555 Hoover Road in Warren. Entombment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Township, Michigan.
