Virginia was born to Clairon and Anna Moses – and their many, many sheep. Her childhood was filled with fun trips to cool off at Lake Washington, practicing piano, working hard on the family farm, and crushing it with her 4-H Club at the state fair - where she and her prized sheep won many awards (including Grand Champion!) and where she met her future husband.
Virginia graduated from school in Mankato, then went on to earn her Bachelor of Education Teaching degree from Mankato State University, MN. She taught in Illinois, Japan, and Fairfax County, Virginia for nearly 30 years - teaching 2nd/3rd grade students. She repeatedly expressed her love of teaching and educating new generations as her students grew and their children became her students all over again. Virginia was celebrated on “Virginia McPhee Day” when she retired from working at Clifton Elementary.
Virginia and James McPhee, USN RTD CPO – a young love, pen-pal friendship turned marriage and lifetime love of over 52 years. They lived the life of a U.S. Navy family – their travels taking them to locations across the USA and into Japan, growing their family along the way. Virginia loved summers at her lake home in Minnesota with her family – enjoying boating, fishing, and living that lake life. Their just-because travels took them all throughout the lower 48 states and up into the wilderness of Alaska in their RV (you bet cha’ it had all the bells and whistles!).
Later in life, Virginia enjoyed many independent years down south at her Florida home – where you would usually find her at the community center card club or out with her beloved pups (Bandit and Foxy Baby). Her transition back up “north” landed her with her children – where she jumped from nest to nest, sharing her love – up until the end. Virginia was all about putting her family first (and boy, did we feel it, Grams). Especially putting her grandchildren first as they became the loves and life purpose of her retirement. Virginia did not know a stranger, and she was well loved by many friends and family.
