Nancy was born in Washington DC on April 24, 1945, to Charles and Doris Rister. She was the second eldest of six children. Nancy grew up in Prince Georges County Maryland but would eventually move to West Virginia where she would graduate from Scott High School.
Nancy wore many hats throughout her life. In her younger years she worked for the Maryland Independent, sold Princess House crystal and was a substitute teacher until settling into her career with the “Telephone Company” (Verizon) where she worked for 30 years. After her retirement from Verizon, Nancy pursued her passion for wedding and event planning and started her first business as a wedding planner, “An Event Extraordinaire”. She opened a second business, “Coordinators Corner” which was a resource for wedding coordinators. She was very proud of these endeavors. Even after she was no longer able to physically do wedding planning, she continued working in that field with Weddings Beautiful until just last year. In addition to her career, she was devoted to charity work and was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, serving as the President of her local chapter for a time.
When Nancy wasn’t working or volunteering, she was spending time with her family and friends. Anyone that knew her knew that Nancy was a social butterfly involving herself in every social situation she could find. She loved to play canasta with her friends and would move heaven and earth to make it to her Tuesday games at the senior center in Lexington Park, MD. When she was at home, she loved to cook and was famous for her chicken and dumplings…..they were the best. When she finally sat down, she loved to snuggle with her cherished pup Archie and watch HGTV or Food Network and sip on a glass of bourbon.
Nancy is survived by her two children, Joy (Thompson) Dickerson and Jay Thompson, daughter-in-law Nicole Thompson, two grandchildren Alyssa Thompson and Taylor Dickerson, stepson Bill Tucker (Stacie), three step grandchildren Stephanie Tucker, Rebecca Tucker and Marianne Seitz, her beloved partner Neil Richardson, her two siblings Frankie Vickers (Wayne) and Charles (Chuck) Rister (Debbie), along with countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents as well as her sisters Virginia Ullman, Esther Posey, Charleen Pauley, brothers-in-law Roger Ullman and Dennis Posey, sister-in-law Patsy Lemko and nephew John Thompson.
Nancy did not wish to have a formal service but would have encouraged everyone to get together to “party” and to talk about what a wonderful human being she was. Nancy loved and was loved by so many and will be truly missed by all.
The family would like to send a special thank you to her hospice nurse Bleh Hare-Warner and CNA Darniese Braswell, who took extraordinary care of her over the past 7 months. Both went above and beyond to make sure not only Nancy was cared for, but also her family. Additionally, the family would like to acknowledge and thank Stacie Tucker for her constant help and support.
If you would like to make a donation in her honor or in lieu of flowers, her chosen charity was St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
