James William Langley, 79, of Hughesville, MD, peacefully passed away on February 3, 2024. James was born on December 3, 1944, to William and Irene Langley in La Plata, MD. He was a life-long resident of Charles County Maryland. James was predeceased by his parents and sister Inez Cusic and brother-in-law Junior Cusic. He is survived by his wife Darlene Langley, two children Thomas Langley (Leesa) and Madonna Montgomery (John). James had 5 grandchildren, Steven (Kaitlyn), Jessi, Cameron, Jordan, and Alex; and 4 great-grandchildren, Aubree, Addison, Grant, and Asher.
James attended Hughesville Public School (now the Barn at the old Hughesville Baseball fields) and graduated LaPlata High School (now Milton Somers) in June 1965. He grew up on the family farm in Hughesville where they raised tobacco until the early 80’s. His first job was at Cabinet Counter in Waldorf as a cabinet maker. He then took his cabinet making skills to the United States Senate Sergeant of Arms. He retired with 26 years of building beautiful furniture for the Government. James continued to build furniture and fireplace mantels for family and friends as a side business for many years.
James loved hunting for rabbits and squirrels and enjoyed fishing. He coached his kids, grandkids, and many others with t-ball and baseball and continued to watch them play when he was not coaching. He always enjoyed his time spent on the ball fields mentoring young kids. James also loved helping his community. He was member of the Hughesville Optimist for many years doing Yule logs and toy deliveries for the needy. He then joined the Greater Waldorf Jaycees and was involved in almost every project in some aspect. His experience with woodworking served the organization well when The Jaycees would participate in Habitat for Humanity. He served numerous positions on the board and eventually became Chapter President in 1990-1991. As the Jaycee Creed reads, “Service to Humanity if the Best of Work” and this was James’ motto in life as well. He was the best husband, dad, grandpa, and friend. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
The family will receive family and friends for visitations on February 19 from 2-4pm and 6-8 pm with prayers beginning at 7pm at Huntt Funeral Home in Waldorf, MD.
