Amelia Vinciguerra, 87, of Waldorf died peacefully in her sleep 9:50 pm, Thursday, August 11, 2022 at her home. She was born in Pula, Croatia (part of Italy at that time) on January 28, 1935 to Ermanno and Giuseppina Biasotto.
She is survived by son, Tom Vinciguerra, daughter, Amy Mitchem, granddaughter Rachel Mitchem, Brothers Antonio Biasotto, Corrado Biasotto, Franco Biasotto, Luciano Biasotto, Nieces Lucia Biasotto, Tiziana Chimenti, Alessia Lorenzetti, Elisa Biasotto, Nephews Giacomo Biasotto, Daniele Biasotto, Francesco Biassotto and many grand-nieces and nephews.
Her parents Ermanno and Giuseppina Biasotto, husband Tony Vinciguerra and brother Gino Biasotto preceded her in death.
Amelia grew-up in Italy during World War II where she witnessed the grime effects of the war. She came to America in August 1956 and settled in Little Italy of Brooklyn, New York where she married Tony Vinciguerra. In 1967, after having two children, the family moved to Waldorf, Maryland and thus she began to work on her broken English. Amelia never lost her accent, and it became stronger as she aged. Her daughter became her translator despite her speaking Italian but knowing well Amelia’s broken-English.
Amelia was very active in the Catholic Churches that she was a member during her lifetime. While her children attended St. Peter’s School in Waldorf, she was active at the school. Later when Amelia and Tony retired to Bethany Beach, Delaware, she sewed blankets for babies through St. Ann’s. After the death of her husband, Amelia moved back to Waldorf, where her faith grew even stronger at Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church. She attended Mass daily when she was physically able and would faithfully recite the Rosary and Divine Mercy at 3 pm daily.
Amelia was extremely artistic and creative. She was well known for her paintings and could sew beautiful clothes without a pattern. She would imagine it and then create it. She was most notably known for her spaghetti sauce (gravy). Her lasagna would melt in your mouth, and she would make it often for as thank-you meals. But if you did not return her plastic container, she would scowl you and refuse to make any more until you did.
The visitation is from 1:30 pm until 2:30 pm on Monday, August 15, 2022 at Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church (100 Village Street, Waldorf, MD 20602) with the funeral mass immediately following. Reverend Alain Colliou will be officiating.
